Yorkshire Residents Face Ongoing Flood Threat: Urgent Action Advised

Current Weather Conditions in Yorkshire

As many parts of the UK grapple with snow warnings and freezing temperatures, residents in Yorkshire are facing a different challenge – persistent flood warnings. The government has issued three flood warnings and seven flood alerts across the region, particularly around Roam Drain, upper River Hull, and the River Derwent.

River Derwent Flooding

Recent rainfall has resulted in high river levels on the River Derwent. Although levels are now falling, low-lying land and properties, especially around Buttercrambe Mill, are expected to be significantly affected. The impact is anticipated to persist for several days.

Upper River Hull Catchment

Elevated river levels in the upper River Hull catchment, exacerbated by recent rainfall and high groundwater levels, pose a threat to areas like Frodingham, Hempholme, Wilfholme, and Burshill, including Roam Drain. The river levels have peaked, but the risk of flooding continues.

Roam Drain Flooding

Roam Drain continues to experience very high levels due to recent rainfall and groundwater conditions. Properties in Hempholme and around Hunt Hill Farm are most at risk. Although the river levels have peaked, flooding is expected to persist for some days.

Urgent Actions for Residents

For those in areas under flood warnings, immediate action is crucial:

  1. Vehicle Safety: Move vehicles to higher ground, if safe to do so.
  2. Evacuation: Move family members, pets, and important items to safety.
  3. Property Protection: Use flood barriers, air brick covers, and any available protection products.
  4. Utilities: Turn off gas, electricity, and water supplies if safe. Avoid electrical switches in flooded areas.
  5. Monitoring: Stay informed about the latest flood risk updates.

Ongoing Flood Alerts

In addition to the flood warnings, seven flood alerts remain in place for various areas, including groundwater flooding south of the Humber Estuary, Gypsey Race and the Wolds, Lower River Derwent, River Foulness and Market Weighton catchment, River Hull Central catchment, Upper River Derwent, and Upper River Hull catchment.

Conclusion

Residents in Yorkshire are urged to take immediate and necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their properties. Monitoring the evolving flood situation and following safety guidelines are paramount. Stay informed, stay safe.
