Iconic Actor David Soul, Best Known for ‘Starsky & Hutch,’ Passes Away at 80

Renowned actor David Soul, famous for his role in the classic television series ‘Starsky & Hutch,’ has died at the age of 80. His wife, Helen Snell, confirmed his passing, stating that he passed away on Thursday after a courageous battle surrounded by family.

Describing Soul as an actor, singer, storyteller, and creative artist, Snell shared that he had left an indelible mark on the world. She expressed gratitude for the support and memories shared by those whose lives he touched, highlighting his infectious smile, laughter, and passion for life.

The US-born actor gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Detective Kenneth “Hutch” Hutchinson alongside Paul Michael Glaser in the crime-solving series ‘Starsky & Hutch,’ which ran from 1975 to 1979. The duo reprised their roles in the 2004 remake with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.

Tributes poured in from fellow actors, with Stiller acknowledging Soul’s contribution to defining the coolness of the ’70s. Soul’s diverse career included roles in ‘Here Come The Brides,’ ‘Magnum Force,’ ‘The Yellow Rose,’ and ‘Salem’s Lot.’ Stephen King, author of the novel that inspired ‘Salem’s Lot,’ expressed sorrow over Soul’s passing.

Apart from his US career, Soul appeared in various British television programs like ‘Holby City,’ ‘Little Britain,’ and ‘Lewis,’ ultimately becoming a British citizen in 2004. Despite opportunities to join reality TV, he declined, stating his reservations about the concept of modern-day celebrity.

Soul’s life was marked by personal challenges, including legal issues in the 1980s related to domestic violence. He later regretted his actions, addressing the issue by speaking with inmates about domestic violence.

Born in Chicago in 1943 as David Solberg, Soul began his career as a folk singer before transitioning to acting. He achieved early success under the moniker “The Covered Man” but found lasting fame when he revealed his identity and pursued acting. His breakthrough came with the role of Officer John Davis in Clint Eastwood’s ‘Magnum Force,’ leading to the iconic ‘Starsky & Hutch’ role.

After the show’s success, Soul returned to music, releasing albums that included chart-toppers like “Silver Lady” and “Don’t Give Up On Us.” Despite facing personal struggles, he continued to contribute to the entertainment industry, leaving an enduring legacy.

Soul, married five times, is survived by his wife Helen Snell, whom he described as his “soulmate.” His impact on both the television and music industries remains etched in the memories of fans worldwide.
