Brits have received a chilling warning to bundle up this weekend as temperatures are anticipated to plummet to as low as -8°C. The Met Office cautions of a stark temperature drop from Saturday onwards, followed by an onslaught of frost, fog, and ice in the coming week. Forecasters highlight the “noticeable” shift in weather conditions. New weather maps pinpoint the areas set to bear the brunt, with Scotland topping the list, bracing for temperatures as low as -8°C as early as 7 am on Sunday.

Following closely are Reading and Brighton, expecting -5°C, and Southampton and Peterborough at -4°C. However, some regions like Newcastle upon Tyne, Liverpool, and Bristol will experience relatively milder temperatures at 0°C. Met Office Chief Forecaster, Jason Kelly, emphasizes the noticeable transition to colder temperatures over the weekend. Next week is expected to be rather cold across the UK, with lower-than-average temperatures accentuated by brisk easterly winds in the south. High-pressure systems predict settled weather, with clearer skies and reduced precipitation, though wintry showers may occur. The combination of freezing overnight temperatures, saturated ground, and calm winds increases the risk of frost, fog, and icy conditions.

The UK Health Security Agency issues a cold weather alert covering the entire country from 9 am on January 6 to 12 noon on January 9. Met Office Deputy Chief Forecaster, Steven Keates, notes that colder conditions will persist, becoming a prominent feature of the upcoming week. The beginning of the week is expected to witness the coldest temperatures of this spell, with a gradual rise towards the end of the week.
